Advantages of Various Methods 

  • Case hardening is well-suited for auto parts that need to maintain their shape and resist shattering under impact (e.g., gears and engineering components).
  • Surface hardening, on the other hand, is ideal for auto parts that need to resist wear and tear (e.g., cylinder walls and engine bearings). 

Of course, there are also advantages and disadvantages to each individual method as well.

  • Carburizing entails submersing the metal in a carbon-rich atmosphere (e.g., charcoal or coke), which makes it well-suited for large batches of auto parts but can be expensive and time-consuming.
  • Cyaniding entails adding cyanide salts to the water and then submerging the metal in the solution; this method is less expensive than carburizing but can be dangerous if not handled properly. 

Choosing The Best Method For Your Needs 

When choosing a method for hardening your auto parts, there are several factors you need to consider, such as cost, time frame, equipment availability, the expertise required, etc. Once you’ve taken all of these factors into account, you’ll be in a better position to choose the best method for your needs.

Keep in mind that choosing a harder service will generally involve some cost considerations. In most cases, you’ll need to purchase or rent equipment and/or materials as well as hire someone with expertise in operating said equipment (unless you have these capabilities yourself).
